Perspective is everything, I believe—especially after reading Jesus’ words to His disciples found in Mark 13:9. He told them about the tough stuff they’d face for being His followers, and then He finished with the most amazing perspective. Here—read it for yourself:
“When these things begin to happen, watch out! You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.”
Reality was that the disciples’ future looked grim, filled with physical torture and even death. Jesus acknowledged the pain they would endure, but He didn’t stop there. Rather, He told them to regard it as an opportunity to tell others about Him.
Hurting people surround us. They want answers. They want relief. They want balm.
They need Jesus.
God’s ways are far beyond ours. We’ll never fully understand them—especially when they’re difficult and we don’t like what’s happening. We can choose to complain, become angry, or fall into a victim mentality. Doing so turns us into bitter people with a tarnished testimony.
Or—we can choose to trust God’s sovereignty and ask Him to use our circumstances as an opportunity to share His hope with others who are hurting.
What would Jesus do? What do we do?
Our perspective matters. Let’s make sure it’s God-honoring so our pain is not wasted.
