Labor Day Logic

Monday, September 5th, 2011

Speaking of labor, here’s a tidbit of logic that proves true in every realm of life: “Laziness leads to a sagging roof; idleness leads to a leaky house” (Ecclesiastes 10:18).

Saggy roof, leaky house

Homeowners understand this verse’s relevancy. If we don’t care for our houses, they’ll fall into disrepair, right? But the principle behind this verse applies to other things as well…

  • Marriage. Keeping it healthy and vibrant takes effort. Laziness in this relationship leads to a lousy relationship or another statistic in the divorce court.
  • Parenting. Be involved in the kids’ lives, volunteer in their schools whenever possible, know who their friends are. Be aware of what they’re watching on TV, the lyrics they’re listening to, and what they’re doing on the internet.
  • Health. Laziness in this context leads to sagging body parts! Get off the couch and take a brisk walk or buy (and use!) a gym membership. ‘Nuff said.
  • Work. Who’s gonna get axed first when cutbacks come?
  • Dreams. We might entertain lofty dreams of what we hope to own or accomplish someday, but those dreams will never be fulfilled if we don’t work towards them.

As summer ends and the season changes, real life begins again. Let’s guard against laziness and idleness, and let’s be diligent about every aspect of our lives. For me, this means returning to regular gym workouts after a summer away due to ministry overseas, being laid up for a week, and spending a week on a houseboat with my family. How about you?

Question for you: Has laziness or idleness crept into your life? If so, how has it impacted you? What changes must you make as a result?

A Speaker’s Confession

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

I hate it when I get soppy while speaking to a women’s group. Trouble is, I just can’t help it sometimes.

Last evening I spoke to a group of about 30 women. We’d met to videotape session 4 for the DVD series based on Moving From Fear to Freedom The title was “Facing the Storms of Life” and I wanted to encourage them not to seek to avoid the storms but to learn to dance in the rain. The only way that’s possible, I believe, is to know Jesus Christ and cling to His promises.

And so, I closed the evening with Isaiah 43:1,2,4,5. “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you, I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you….You are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you.”

Everything went well until I reached the part about the flames, and that’s when it hit me. Looking over the audience, I saw the faces of several women experiencing storms right now, and my heart broke for them. The pain of cancer, prodigal kids, divorce, abuse….it’s all there. My voice choked up and I couldn’t continue. It seemed like forever until I could speak, and when I did, words came from my mouth that I hadn’t anticipated saying.

“I know that some of you are going through storms right now. I want to make myself available to you to talk or pray, so I’ll sit at the back of this room. Come see me there, if you like.” Three women responded. God was at work, doing something good apart from my script. Imagine that.

This morning I struggle with mixed feelings. The choked voice, the pause, the struggle to regain my composure – it’s all on videotape. Part of me wrestles with feelings of failure as a speaker. The other part says to let it go and just let God do what He wants. His heart breaks for the pain these women carry, too. The good news is that He wants to heal them, to fill their hearts with peace and joy, to free them from their fears….to teach them to dance in the rain. And I’m trusting that He’ll do it regardless of my weaknesses and foibles.

These verses from Isaiah are so powerful. I pray that God will use them to accomplish His purposes in the lives of these precious women and those who will watch the video series when it’s released. I pray that they’ll bless you today, too, my friend.

Is there any part of these verses that’s particularly meaningful to you today?

Journal Entry for April 1-2

Friday, April 10th, 2009

I think the attitude with which I read the Bible is forever changed. Over two days, I’ve spent 16 hours participating in “The Truth Project,” produced by Focus on the Family. Our group watched 8 videos on which Del Tackett lectured about Biblical truth as applied to marriage, politics, economics, creation, and more. After each, we split into small groups to discuss what we’d learned and how to apply these insights to our lives.

I was reminded that God is involved in every aspect of our lives and has issued commands for our well-being. I dare not change His commands to fit my whims, nor alter them to suit my circumstances. If I don’t cling to His Word as absolute truth, I’ll run into trouble.

I was challenged not to accept societal norms as “right” just because many people are putting their stamp of approval on them. Here’s an example: society (and the media) says I have the right to be happy. If that means divorcing my husband because I think I’ll be happier in the arms of a different man, then so be it.

God’s Word says otherwise. I’m to remain faithful to my marriage vow until death parts me and my spouse. That might mean enduring very difficult days or weeks or months, or even years. It might mean caring for him if he suffers a crippling injury or illness. It might mean denying my desires for a nice house and financial security so my husband can pursue a job he loves rather than spend most of his waking hours toiling at a task he doesn’t enjoy simply because it pays well.

Statistics show that society approves of divorce. In fact, I read a newspaper article recently that says there are “divorce fairs” in the U.K., designed to help making splitting up easier. But Scripture says that God hates divorce. Is that simply because of the pain inflicted on everyone involved? Not necessarily, although I believe He grieves over it. His hatred for divorce flows from the fact that it goes against His character. He is a God of unity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – three separate beings in one. It’s a mystery, I know. He’s designed marriage to reflect that unity, by a man and woman – two separate entities – becoming one flesh. Another mystery. Divorce destroys that unity. It goes against His very character, and that’s what makes it wrong. That’s also why it has such negative effects.

“The Truth Project” contained so much good information that I hope to study it again in the near future. For now, I’ll summarize by saying there’s a cosmic battle going on between good and evil, and its forces are fighting for our souls. The enemy wants to steal, kill and destroy, but our Creator God has plans to give us a future and a hope. Those plans were revealed in the person of Jesus Christ who declared Himself to be “the way, the truth, and the life.” When we live life His way, according to His truth, we enjoy intimate relationship with our Creator. What a gift!
