Having a deep relationship with Jesus is available to everyone who wants it. It doesn’t matter our age, race, gender, or economic status. If we want intimacy with Jesus, it’s ours for the asking. How encouraging is that?
That said, Jesus Himself stated a requisite: “Those who obey my commandments are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them, and I will love them. And I will reveal myself to each one of them” (John 14:21). He repeated Himself in John 14:23: “…All those who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and live with them.”
Imagine the intimacy possible if we only meet that requisite of obedience…
Jesus promises to love us.
Jesus promises to reveal Himself to us.
Jesus promises to come and live with us.
Incredible, life-changing, hope-giving intimacy with Christ is available to you and me right now! But tapping into it and mining its depths depends on one thing—obedience. That’s where the challenge often lies.
Our human nature protests and our desire for control kicks in. Fear and doubt rear their heads. We cling to our perceived rights, and we clamor to do things our way. All to our own detriment. Dumb, eh?
I desire intimacy with Christ more than anything. As a result, several months ago I asked Him to reveal areas in my life that were hindering this relationship. Oh my. The Holy Spirit began peeling the layers and I began feeling like a human onion.
I’ve discovered a lot about my own shortcomings, especially my tendency to compare myself to other women (despite encouraging other women not to do this). I’ve also realized my forgetfulness when it comes to giving thanks in all circumstances.
I’m grateful that the Holy Spirit has pointed out these areas (and more) that need attention, and I’ve asked Him to help me align them with the Word. Doing so doesn’t earn me spiritual brownie points, but it removes debris from the pathway that leads to intimacy with Jesus.
How about you? What areas of your life need attention in order to enjoy a deeper relationship with Jesus? Here are five common issues that hinder intimacy—read them and ask the Holy Spirit to show you if they apply to your life.
