…God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on that day when Christ Jesus comes back again. (Philippians 1:6NLT)
“I sometimes wonder if I’ll ever get it right.” A woman spoke these words to me recently within the context of her weight loss journey. “Somedays it’s easy to say no to unhealthy snacks and second helpings. Other days are a different story.”
Most of us can relate to this woman’s feelings. Our struggle might be different than hers, but we, too, experience victories and losses. Sometimes we mimic a mighty warrior, but other times not so much. Despite our best intentions, we do the very thing we vowed we’d never do again. We wonder if we’ll ever get it right. Admit it–we are all works-in-progress.
Truth be told, we’ll never get it right all the time this side of heaven. But here’s one thing we can do—ask God to give us hearts that joyfully obey His commands and then thank Him for being faithful to complete the good work He has begun in us. He knows we’re works-in-progress, and He patiently keeps changing and refining us to make us more like Jesus. Knowing He never gives up on us gives us the ability to extend grace to ourselves and persevere.
For what area in your life are you trusting God to complete the good work He has begun? As for me, one of those areas is in my wellness journey. Traveling so much makes it hard to stay on track with healthy eating and regular exercise, and I seriously don’t want to revert to old ways and habits. I have to accept myself as a work-in-progress and trust God for victory in this area of my life.
How about you, my fellow work-in-progress? For what are you trusting God to complete in your life?
