A Prayer that Brings a Guaranteed “Yes”

A Prayer that Brings a Guaranteed “Yes” - Grace Fox

When I pray for wisdom, I know God will answer. He’ll do the same for you. He wants you to succeed in life, and He longs to give you the tools to do so.

My useless prayer

I was in sixth grade when I developed a crush on a classmate named Grant. His presence made my heart flutter and my face flush.

I longed for the feelings to be mutual, and so my daily prayer sounded something like this: “Dear God, please make Grant like me.” If he happened to be within eyeshot when I handed God this request, I’d often add a postscript: “I’m going to count to ten. If Grant looks at me before I stop counting, then I’ll know You’ve answered my prayer. Amen.”

The postscript backfired more times than I care to remember, and I’d count to fifteen or twenty to give Grant more time to respond. How gracious of me!

My sixth grade prayer sorely lacked power and purpose. Sadly, many of our adult prayers fall into the same category because we’re too focused on our own wants and agendas to be in tune with God’s heart. Then we wonder why our prayers aren’t being answered as we wish.

Solomon’s wise prayer

Here’s a prayer that brings a guaranteed yes: “Father, please give me wisdom.”

When King Solomon began his reign, the Lord appeared to him in a dream and asked,

“What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you” (1 Kings 3:5)

Solomon admitted his feelings of inadequacy for the task and replied,

Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?” (1 Kings 3:9)

Solomon’s request pleased the Lord. He replied, “I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have” (1 Kings 3:10,12).

Wow – God didn’t give Solomon just a pinch of wisdom. He gave him an entire  truckload! How’s that for a positive answer to a simple prayer request?

I pray for wisdom every day…

  • to know how to relate to my adult children and their spouses
  • to know how to be a grandmother who leaves a lasting legacy
  • to know how to be the best wife I can be
  • to know how to use my time most effectively
  • to know when to say yes and when to say no to requests that come my way
  • to know what to teach at women’s retreats and conferences
  • to know what to write for my blog and newsletter, for articles and for books

When I pray for wisdom, I know God will answer my prayer. He’ll do the same for you. He wants you to succeed in life, and He longs to give you the tools to do so. He doesn’t expect you to figure out life on your own.

Have a good day, my friend

Take a moment, if you would, to share what you need wisdom for today. I’ll pray for you.

Know you are loved,

Grace

  1. Pray with me, in the name of Christ, for the wisdom to know God’s plan for me going forward. I have given my life for others – the last of whom was my mother in her final years (she went home 9/5/11). Last year I lost my job, my home, and Mom. At 56, I am feeling lost… Praying daily for salvation and purpose.
    God Bless!

    1. “Heavenly Father, I pray that You will fill Mark with all spiritual wisdom and understanding to know what Your mind is for him at this time. When discouragement sets in, please replace it with a hunger to know You more intimately no matter what, and an overwhelming confidence in Your sovereignty. Turn this dry season into a lush pastureland, a rich experience that reveals more of Your character to him in an amazing way. We trust You to do these things, and to provide meaningful employment, too. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

  2. Thank you so much for this post, Grace! It was very encouraging.

And thank you so much for the offer to pray!

I could use some prayers for wisdom in writing a book, and knowing which of my book ideas to go with, and what genre, etc. I just started Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writers Guild Craftsman program, which means I’ll be going to a residency in August where he and some others will critique parts of my manuscript. The only problem is, I don’t have one yet, haha. So prayers for that would be greatly and dearly appreciated! I’d also be open to any advice you may have.

Thank you so much, and I hope this finds you well!

    1. “Heavenly Father, thank You for giving Elizabeth the ability to communicate through the written word. Please make her pathway clear as she pursues this calling. Direct her thoughts re: which book idea to work on. When she sits down to write, grant creativity and clarity. May she be completely in tune with Your Holy Spirit’s voice so she effectively reaches readers and becomes a life-changing vessel in Your hands. We’re trusting You to do exceeding abundantly above all we can ask or imagine in this regard. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

  3. Thank you so, so much Grace for taking the time to do this! I cannot tell you how much your prayer meant to me. You’ve comforted and encouraged me through your kind prayer. I appreciate it more than I can say!

  4. Nice prayer. Let me share this :
    Lord Give me wisdom
to know when to speak and when to keep silent,
to know when to act and when to refrain from action,
to know when to speak my mind and when to hold my peace.

    1. Those are great words, Amy. What a different it would make if everyone prayed that prayer and meant it. Blessing to you!
