God, Keep Me From Lying To Myself

Keep Me From Lying To Myself - Grace Fox

Living by God’s truth and in His light ensures His blessing and power in our lives. I much prefer this to living in lies and darkness. I’m sure you do, too.

So I’m in Hamilton, Ontario this morning and staying with a new friend—Maureen—a woman I met yesterday. She has a backyard sanctuary where squirrels and chipmunks come to feast on the seeds she supplies.

This is where I sit, sipping coffee at a glass patio table, reading the Word, and enjoying the breeze. Bliss. Calm before the rest of the weekend which begins by speaking at a banquet this evening.

This morning I read from one of my all-time favorite chapters. It amazes me how new insights pop off the page every time I read it. Here’s today’s nugget:

“Keep me from lying to myself; give me the privilege of knowing your law” (Psalm 119:29).

It’s too easy to lie

How easy it is to lie to myself—to justify behaviors and attitudes I don’t want to change.

Here are a few examples:

  • I need more stuff. A nicer couch, a better fridge, a newer car. If I had these things, then I’d be truly happy.
  • I can’t physically get stronger and feel better as I age. The natural progression means it’s all downhill!
  • The thoughts on which I linger don’t really impact my life.

His written word shows me the truth

Thankfully God has given me the privilege of having His written Word (and in multiple translations). Together with the Holy Spirit, it shows me the errors in my thinking and then reveals the truth.

I don’t need more stuff. I do need to learn contentment (Philippians 4:12)

I can enjoy good health despite the natural aging progression if I make wise choices and practice self-discipline. After all, my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and deserves respect (1 Corinthians 6:19).

The thoughts on which I linger matter big time. They ultimately determine the direction of my life. Therefore, fix my mind on what is true, honorable, and right (Philippians 4:8).

Living by God’s truth and in His light ensures His blessing and power in our lives. I much prefer this to living in lies and darkness. I’m sure you do, too.

How about you?

What lies have you told yourself?

How does God’s truth contradict them?

Know you are loved,

Grace

  1. I have noticed that for years and years, in fact most of my life, when I was in need of help, there usually was no help for me. As I grew in Christ, I learned to seek out help, and often it was the wrong help; that is, not right for my circumstances necessarily. As years went on and I grew in the Word, the help I found was beginning to address my needs; The very first real help I received from a person whom God sent my way, was you, Grace Fox, and I have now come beyond a point (no turning back), in my spiritual growth.
I noticed that since this has taken place, God is providing for me in so many different areas of my life, where it seems now that I am going forward, and my distress and burdens have been lessened, and in many respects, removed. Today I lift up the Lord; the Name of Jesus, and in thanks and praise, I give him glory, and I thank you Grace, for what you have done for me………..how my life has changed because you cared, and then you acted on my behalf and began a change that has brought me up above the victim stage, and brought me into the Victory which Christ has for all who live in/for him.
I take pleasure in knowing Him, and you!

    1. From victim to victory, Marge. That describes your journey! I’m thrilled that God has used me to encourage you. I’m only a conduit; He’s the power and life-giver. Have a wonderful day. And know you are loved.
