God’s Word – The Treasure That is Ours

What comes to mind when you hear the word treasure?

My imagination conjures up images of an ancient trunk stuffed with rubies, emeralds, diamonds, and pearls, and overflowing with gold and silver bracelets and necklaces.

This trunk is stashed in a musty cave where pirates once camped, perhaps, or hidden in the relics of a sunken ship several hundred feet beneath the sea. Only a handful of history-lovers believe it exists.

Tales from the past have aroused their curiosity and tempted their tastebuds for instant wealth. Now they band together, pool their funds and knowledge, and formulate a plan: find the treasure.

Finding the treasure

Years pass. Bank accounts dwindle. Enthusiasm wanes. But one day their efforts pay off.

“We did it!” they shout. “We’re rich!” They thrust their hands into the bounty. They hug, they dance, they do cartwheels, and they slap each other on the back. Excitement rules the day, and the next day, and the next. All this for a treasure, a material commodity that can cause a heap of trouble if mismanaged.

Psalm 119:162 says, “I rejoice in your word like one who discovers a great treasure.”

I read this verse and ask myself, Is this true? Do I cherish God’s Word as much as the treasure hunters value their find? Do I recognize the wealth that is mine, found in the holy Scriptures? Do I celebrate the riches I hold in my hands?

I don’t spin cartwheels when I read my Bible, but my heart dances for joy as the Holy Spirit reveals the riches within its pages. More and more, I recognize Scripture’s value and appreciate the wealth of wisdom it offers.

We truly have a treasure at our fingertips. I trust we recognize its worth. God forbid we keep it hidden to ourselves, but rather, share it with others so they can enjoy it, too.
