When God’s Orders Don’t Make Sense
Sometimes God tells us to do things that don’t make sense. He told Noah to build an ark. I can hear Noah now: “An ark? Okay. Uh–what’s an ark?”
Sometimes God tells us to do things that don’t make sense.
He told Noah to build an ark. I can hear Noah now: “An ark? Okay. Uh—what’s an ark?”
He told Gideon to whittle his army down until only 300 men remained. Imagine a modern-day, real-life general presenting that strategy to his officers and expecting them to agree.
He told the disciples to return to the same fishing hole where they’d cast nets all night and caught nothing.
Sometimes God gives marching orders that defy human logic
Our human nature automatically questions whether we heard Him correctly or He knows what He’s doing.
Can you relate? I sure can. Here’s a peek at some conversation snippets I’ve had with God lately…
“Write another book proposal? What’s the point of putting time and energy into that when publishers’ rejections are more common than acceptances?”
“Minister in Romania again this summer? But that means trusting You to supply a team and the finances, and You know how difficult that is.”
“Start a life coaching practice? But that means marketing, and that means spending time and money, neither of which are plentiful right now.”
And then I read God’s word, and it strips away my arguments
10The LORD replied [to Moses], ‘All right. This is the covenant I am going to make with you. I will perform wonders that have never been done before anywhere in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people around you will see the power of the LORD—the awesome power I will display through you. 11Your responsibility is to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then I will surely drive out all those who stand in your way—the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.’(Exodus 34:10-11)
God gives us marching orders, and it’s our job to obey. The results are His responsibility. We don’t need to hesitate until we see how the details will fall into place. Rather, we ought to step out in faith, trusting God to lead and to provide whatever’s necessary to get the job done.
The only question we ought to ask is this: Is God telling me to do this?
If the answer is yes, then we must obey. Completely. As we move forward, God will remove all obstacles and reveal His power to us and through us.
