Understanding the Names of God: El Emunah

God never makes a promise He cannot keep. We can count on Him to keep His word because His faithfulness is rooted in His character, and He never lies.

Several years ago, I sat at my desk facing a dilemma that felt impossible. I’d committed to teach at a women’s conference nearly 600 miles from home, but several weeks before the event my left Achilles tendon ruptured. This injury landed me in a knee-high cast. “No weight-bearing,” warned the doctor.

A week after my Achilles blew, my right knee suffered an injury. That meant I could no longer use crutches to get around, so now I was confined to a wheelchair. Add insomnia and full-blown menopause to the mix, and the mere thought of traveling and teaching felt overwhelming. I stared at my conference notes and prayed, God, I don’t know what to do. Should I cancel, or should I go?

A second later, my eyes landed on a note with words from Judges scribbled in my handwriting: “Go in the strength you have…and I will be with you.” (Judges 6:14; Judges 6:16) I couldn’t remember writing those words, but they’d obviously struck a chord at some time or other, and they reverberated in a big way that day.

These words came from God’s promise to Gideon when He appointed him to attack the Midianites. When I read the words scrawled on the scrap paper, it dawned on me that God didn’t ask Gideon to provide the strength needed for the task. He told him to go in the strength he had—albeit limited—and promised His presence.

God invited Gideon to trust Him in the face of the unknown, and He did the same for me.

I responded with a yes. Along the journey, God provided every detail—a wheelchair-accessible church, a helpful volunteer, accommodations suited perfectly to my needs, and strength that exceeded my own. Looking back, I realize I wasn’t simply fulfilling a speaking commitment. I was experiencing El Emunah—the faithful God.

What does El Emunah mean?

The name El Emunah means “the Faithful God.” It describes God as loyal, steadfast, trustworthy, constant, and true. The Hebrew word emunah carries ideas of firmness, reliability, and unwavering support. It comes from a root word that infers pillars or supports holding up a structure.  It offers us a beautiful image of God as the pillar on which we lean when life trembles beneath our feet.

The name El Emunah first appears in Deuteronomy 32:4–

“He is the Rock; his deeds are perfect. Everything he does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong;
how just and upright he is!”

Being faithful is not merely something God does. It is who He is. And because His faithfulness is rooted in His unchanging character, it never changes.

Five Bible verses about God’s faithfulness

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly reminds His children that His faithfulness is certain.

  • Lamentations 3:22–23
“The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.”

God’s well of faithfulness never runs dry. No matter what challenges we face, His presence goes with us and His promises stand secure.

  • Deuteronomy 7:9
“Understand, therefore, that the LORD your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant…”

God never makes a promise He cannot keep. We can count on Him to keep His word because His faithfulness is rooted in His character, and He never lies.

  • Psalm 36:5
“Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.”

God’s faithfulness is infinite. It stretches further than our eyes can see.

  • 2 Timothy 2:13
“If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.”

Even our inconsistencies cannot alter God’s character. He remains true to His Word and to His people because that’s who He is.

  • 1 Corinthians 10:13
“God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand.”

God’s faithfulness strengthens us when we feel weak. Of this we can be sure.

Three ways in which God is faithful to us

Understanding God’s faithfulness brings us comfort, but recognizing how it touches our daily lives changes everything.

  • He faithfully guides us

Life often places us at crossroads where we don’t know which direction to take, yet God promises wisdom and direction to those who seek Him. Sometimes His guidance comes through Scripture. Sometimes through wise counsel. Sometimes through a quiet nudge from His Spirit. He never abandons His children to navigate life alone.

2. He faithfully provides strength

God rarely gives us strength months in advance. More often, He gives what we need moment by moment. That’s what I discovered on that conference trip. I didn’t suddenly wake up one morning brimming with energy and confidence. Instead, God supplied exactly what was needed exactly when it was needed. Not early. Not late. Right on time.

  • He faithfully stays with us

People fail us. Circumstances disappoint us. Expectations collapse. But God remains. Hebrews 13:5 says, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” Our security rests not in our ability to hold tightly to Him, but in His unwavering grip on us.

Our security rests not in our ability to hold tightly to Him, but in His unwavering grip on us.

Perhaps today you’re facing your own impossible situation. Maybe you’re wondering whether you have enough strength, wisdom, or courage for what lies ahead.

You might not, but El Emunah does. Because He is faithful, you can take the next step trusting that the One who calls you will also sustain you.

Here’s my prayer today —

El Emunah, thank You for being a faithful God on whom we can rely at all times. Thank You for providing stability and strength especially when we feel weak. Because of who You are, we know we can count on You. We choose to trust You in all things.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

  1. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed today. I have an elderly sister who visited yesterday. She is often abrasive and hyper. Often when we are together, she raises her voice and gets angry. She has no patience, but she’s a Christian. She keeps making excuses that she’s older now and can’t help it bc she gets excited …it’s just not easy being with her and then the worst part is that she gaslights me and makes it about me. I don’t often ask this, especially from people like you who are super busy, but please keep me in prayer about it. Her name is Phyllis. Thank you for all that you do. Gina

    1. Hi Gina:

I’m sorry about this challenge you’re facing. “Father, thank You for promising to give wisdom in abundance when we need it. We’re asking for wisdom for Gina in this situation. We also ask for patience, perseverance, and peace. Fill her with Your Spirit so every response brings honor to You. And work in her sister’s life as well. We trust You to draw her into a deeper, sweeter relationship with You for Your name’s sake. In Jesus’s name, amen.”

        1. Hi Gina:

I’ve heard that the book has arrived at the warehouse. The countdown is on for launch!

          Have a great day,

  2. Thank you for sharing your story, Grace, proving that we CAN “take the next step trusting that the One who calls [us] will also sustain [us]. Hallelujah! In this moment I’m re-releasing a burden to my faithful Father and reminding myself to take my eyes off the horizon, causing overwhelm. “One step at a time” must be my focus!

    1. Hi Nancy:

“One step at a time” — exactly right. Keeping our focus on our faithful God who leads us so well is the way to go. That’s how we learn to rest in His care. Nestle, not wrestle.

Have a great day, and know you are loved,
      Grace
