Finding Joy When Joy Feels Distant

Enter into the Master's Joy

God is a loving Father who wants us to experience joy. He adopts us, delights in us, prays for us, pursues us, welcomes us, and prepares a home for us.

It’s easy to feel weighed down when we look at our world today. News headlines highlight political unrest, disasters, and uncertainty. Closer to home, many of us face personal challenges—health struggles, tension within families over the political unrest, or financial concerns. Against such a backdrop, joy might feel distant or even unrealistic.

But Scripture tells us otherwise. In Matthew 25, Jesus describes a master who welcomes his faithful servants with these words: “Enter into the joy of your master.” God is not harsh or joyless, though we sometimes perceive Him that way. Rather, He is a God of joy who invites us to share in it even when life is downright difficult and joy feels distant. Understanding His true character changes everything.

Let’s look at six reasons we can rejoice in Him today.

He Adopts Us

Before the world began, God chose us in Christ and decided to adopt us into His family (Ephesians 1:4–5). Through Jesus, we are no longer outsiders—we are beloved children who belong. Paul writes in Romans 8:15 that we can call Him “Abba, Father.” This truth alone gives us reason to rejoice. We’re never alone; we’re part of a family that spans the globe and eternity.

He Delights in Us

Zephaniah 3:17 paints a breathtaking picture: God takes delight in us, calms our fears, and rejoices over us with singing. The thought of the Creator of the universe delighting in us may be hard to grasp, but it’s true. I’ve thought about this when I’ve had opportunity to sing to my grandchildren. Whether it’s “This is the Day” in the morning or “Jesus Loves the Little Children” at bedtime, I want them to know they are cherished. In a far greater way, God sings His truth over us every day.

He Prays for Us

Life sometimes leaves us speechless. We don’t know what to pray, and we can barely whisper, “Help.” Romans 8:26–27 assures us that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groans too deep for words. I experienced this one evening when I was deeply concerned for a friend’s marriage. In desperation, I cried out for help. God led me—almost humorously—to a page in one of my own devotionals that spoke directly to my situation. He knows our heart even when we can’t express it. That is reason for joy.

He Pursues Us

Psalm 23:6 reminds us that God’s goodness and mercy pursue us. The Hebrew word carries the idea of a hot chase, like sheepdogs relentlessly bringing strays back to the shepherd. God’s love doesn’t trail behind us timidly; it chases us down with determination. When we wander or grow weary, He pursues us to restore and revive us. His love will not let us go.

He Welcomes Us

In the parable of the prodigal son, the father runs to embrace his wayward child and throws a party in his honor (Luke 15:20-24). That’s how God receives us when we return to Him—not with shame, but with celebration. No matter how far we’ve strayed, His arms are always open.

He Prepares a Home for Us

Jesus promised His disciples that He was going to prepare a place for them (John 14:1–3). Our eternal future is secure, and it is bright beyond imagination. Revelation 21 says there will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain. What greater reason for joy than knowing we are destined for a forever home filled with God’s presence and peace?

Living in Joy

When we understand who God truly is, our perspective changes. He is not a harsh taskmaster but a loving Father who wants us to experience joy and does everything imaginable to make that possible. He adopts us, delights in us, prays for us, pursues us, welcomes us, and prepares a home for us. These truths anchor us in a joy that no circumstance can steal.

The world may be in turmoil and deep, abiding joy might feel distant, but our God is unchanging. His joy is available today and forever.

How about you?

Which of these six truths brings you the most joy right now, and why?

Know you are loved,

Grace
