Jesus Satisfies our Spiritual Thirst

Jesus Satisfies Our Spiritual Thirst - Grace Fox

Teeny sips of Jesus, so to speak, might quench our thirst momentarily, but they’re not enough for the long haul. Drink deeply and find your thirst quenched.

As part of my journey towards better health, I’ve been learning to drink more water every day. I begin by downing at least one cup immediately after rising and before I put anything else into my mouth. I continue throughout the day, using a 500 ml water bottle so I can easily track my consumption.

Our bodies, being largely comprised of water, need it to survive. And so, we must drink sufficient amounts to ensure we stay properly hydrated. Soda, coffee, and fruit juices are fluids, too, but they just don’t do the trick. 1

Much mention is made about water in the spiritual realm. Take John 4:10,13-14 for instance. These words record the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman when she went to the village well to draw water.

Referring to the water in the well, Jesus told the woman,

“People soon become thirsty again after drinking this water. But the water I give them takes away thirst altogether. It becomes a perpetual spring within them, giving them eternal life.’”

Jesus—the living water—quenches our spiritual thirst. We can seek satisfaction through substitutes such as work, money, nice clothes, fitness, travel, relationships—you name it—but they just don’t do the trick.

Jesus alone satisfies our deepest longings. But—here’s the caveat—that happens best when we grow our friendship with Him by spending time in His presence.

Drink deeply

Teeny sips of Jesus, so to speak, might quench our thirst momentarily, but they’re not enough for the long haul.

Our souls are best refreshed when we slow down long enough to drink deeply.

“The LORD GOD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. With joy you will drink deeply from the fountain of salvation!” (Isaiah 12:2-3 NLT).

For me, it means reading the Word every morning and journaling what I believe the Holy Spirit is saying to me. I often take a break in the middle of my day to walk around my neighborhood and pray as I go.

I especially value occasional getaways where I limit my cell phone and computer time. That’s when I can sit quietly, basking in God’s presence. I ask Him to speak to me there and to give me ears to hear. He always answers my prayer, and I return to my responsibilities filled to the brim spiritually, ready to pour out again.

Our bodies need water; our souls need the Living Water. Drink deeply, my friend, and find your thirst quenched.

How about you?

What might drinking deeply from the Living Water look like for you? Everyone’s different, so it won’t look the same from person to person.

  1. I like that idea of walking around the neighbourhood and praying. I, too, love spending time in God’s word very early in morning and then a little time in prayer, and praise, and thanking God for the morning and for giving me life. I love the Psalms and Isaiah where God let’s us know how much he loves us……………..he is forever faithful and wants good things for his children. Yes, his word is living water, and we need it. Praising and worshipping Him fills us and builds us up for the tasks he gives us each day.
