God is Involved in the Details of Our Lives

You may have experienced or witnessed events for which there was no human explanation, and seeing it unfold bolstered your faith.

Something happened this week to remind me of God’s involvement in our lives.

Sailor-Man and I are in the process of renovating our 55-year-old townhouse. Two days ago, the contractor phoned and asked if I could meet him there today to finalize details.

Truth be told, Sailor-Man makes that hour-long commute from Richmond to Abbotsford three days per week. I work from our boat-home, so I make that drive only once or twice a month and always with Sailor-Man on the days he goes to the office. This time, however, I drove alone because he is out of town.

When my meeting with the contractor ended, a thought came to mind: “Go to the House of James.” That’s the local Christian bookstore, one of my favorite places in Abbotsford. I wanted to return home as quickly as possible, but I couldn’t resist the idea of stopping by the bookstore first.

To my delight, I saw Names of God: Knowing Peace on the top shelf of the bestsellers list when I entered the store. Then I saw the salesclerk behind the counter. She was new to me, so I introduced myself and thanked her for her role in putting my book into readers’ hands. We chatted briefly, and then I spent a few minutes browsing.

When I returned to the counter to make my purchase, the same woman gave me a big smile and said to the man whom she was serving, “There she is! She’s the one who wrote this book!” She held up a copy of Knowing Peace and said, “This man is buying your book!”

The customer looked incredulous. “You’re the author?” he asked. “My wife is never going to believe this! She’s at a nearby church teaching this study right now. She sent me to buy a copy for a relative’s birthday present.” Then he said, “One of these names is about God fighting for us, right?”

“That’s Yahweh Tzevaot,” I said, “but it isn’t in this book. It’s in Names of God: Living Unafraid.”

“Wait—what? You have more than one book about God’s names?” he asked.

“Yes, Knowing Peace is the second in the series, and Growing Strong will be the third, scheduled for release in July.”

The man looked at the salesclerk. “Do you have Living Unafraid in stock?”

“Yes, we do,” she answered, and then she told him where to find it.

The man and I talked for a few minutes more, and then he left with autographed copy in hand.

“Wow—that was amazing,” said the clerk. “Definitely God-ordained. What are the chances of someone coming to the counter with your book in hand when you were here?”

God is in the details

The woman was correct. The odds were slim:

  • I rarely make that drive into Abbotsford on a weekday because the round trip uses two hours of my work time. It wasn’t a coincidence that our contractor asked to meet me today—the same day that the man went to House of James to run an errand for his wife.
  • Driving alone made it possible for me to respond immediately to that nudge to visit the store. If Sailor-Man had been with me, I would have driven him to the office before going to the store. The delay would have meant missing the man.
  • The clerk behind the counter was new to me, so I made the effort to meet her and mention my book. If I hadn’t done so, she would never have known who I was or made the connection between me, the man, and the book he wanted to buy.
  • The man mentioned a specific name of God. Because I knew that name was in Living Unafraid rather than Knowing Peace, I was able to direct him to the correct book. He was happy, and I’m sure his wife was happy as well.

God is in the details, right? You probably have similar stories. You may have experienced or witnessed events for which there was no human explanation, and seeing it unfold bolstered your faith. Only the God who is involved in the details of our lives can orchestrate happenings to happen as they do.

Joseph saw God in the details

Joseph’s story in Genesis 37-45 teems with evidence of God’s presence and involvement in the details of his life.

  • Joseph’s jealous brothers threw him into a cistern which was empty. If it was full, he might have drowned. (Genesis 37:24)
  • The brothers had a change of heart. (Genesis 37:26) If they hadn’t, they would have let him die.
  • A caravan of traders passed by, so the brothers used the opportunity to sell Joseph. This positioned him in Egypt. (Genesis 37:27)
  • Joseph was sold to Potiphar whose wife took an inappropriate liking to him. (Genesis 39:10-18) This led to his being thrown into prison.
  • In prison, Joseph was placed in charge of other prisoners. Eventually, these prisoners included the Pharaoh’s cup-bearer and baker, and they both had a dream. (Genesis 40:8-19) God gave Joseph the power to interpret those dreams.
  •  Joseph’s reputation for interpreting dreams put him before Pharaoh who made him the second-in-command over Egypt. (Genesis 41:39-44)

The story goes on. Every detail mentioned here plays a role in that story as it unfolds to accomplish God’s purposes for Joseph, his family, and the Israelites. Thousands of years later, it’s easy for us to see that, but do you suppose Joseph was aware of God’s presence and hand in the details at the time? If he was, he may have wondered what in the world God was up to!

A promise that assures us of God’s involvement

The God who loved Joseph and directed his steps is the same God who loves and directs us. Every day, God writes another page in the story of our lives. And every day, He pens the fine print.  Sometimes we see His involvement in obvious ways, like my experience in House of James. Other times, we miss it because we’re too busy to notice, or the details aren’t as obvious.

At any rate, God is with us just as He was with Joseph, and He is actively engaged in the happenings of our lives, too. Here’s what the psalmist wrote in that regard:

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Psalm 37:23 NLT

As with Joseph, our lives will never be problem-free. God might allow us to experience situations that leave us questioning His wisdom and ways, but let’s remember that He has purposes we cannot see in the present. Let’s also remember that He’s very wise and always good. We can trust Him with the details, every day and in every way.

Your turn!

How have you seen God’s involvement in the details of your life recently?

  1. I love this story, Grace! I just recommended Knowing Peace to one of Cindy McDowell’s sisters, whose WOTY is peace. If Cindy were still with us, she of course would have recommended it as well. So proud of how you are partnering with God in your ministry!

    1. Hi Maggie! Thanks so much for popping in here. And thanks for recommending “Names of God: Knowing Peace” to one of Cindy’s sisters. Peace seems to be in short supply in the face of worldwide uncertainty, but we have every reason for hope knowing Jesus never changes. He’s our anchor!

    1. Hi Marilyn:

I hope you do! Suggest them to your women’s ministry leader as a group study, too. I’m hearing from more and more groups even since Christmas about churches using them as their spring study. Knowing who God is by name and learning to live from that truth changes everything.

  2. This is a great, down-to-earth testimony of “God in the details”! Mine isn’t a story, it’s a “noticing” Him as I welcome Him into everyday life. For example, my focus word is “welcome” and I see the word or the idea pop up almost daily.

    1. Hi Deborah:

I love what you said about noticing Him as you welcome into everyday life. Extending Him an invitation to step into every detail of your day would be a great prayer to whisper even before rolling out of bed.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here!

  5. When we decided to sell our house and move from Niagara area to Collingwood on Georgian Bay last spring, to be closer to our daughter and her family. I had such a calm feeling, we found a senior apartment with things on our list like a balcony, everything included except cable and internet. There is a breezeway that joins our building to the seniors residence next door and we get to take part in all the activities there. There is even a saltwater pool and aqua fit classes. There was no waiting list which was amazing! The waiting lists in Niagara are up to 18 months. This winter we are getting a Lot of snow but we don’t have to go out that much just walk next door.
Our house still hasn’t sold, the market is bad right now, knowing it is in Gods hands I am not stressing about it. But it sure would be nice if it sold so the 3 family members that are checking on it don’t have to do it any more. So prayers of thanks for where we are and for the house sale would be appreciated.
    Blessings Ann

    1. Hi Ann:

Wow — I can see God’s sovereignty over the details of your living situation. As surely as He provided a new place for you, He will sell the old in His time. He’s got this, and He’s got you in His hands. “Lord, we trust You to work out the details on the sale of Ann’s house. Bring about the very best outcome, and continue to give her peace as she waits on You. In Jesus’s name, amen.”

  6. I do see God in the details so frequently , but I’m going to share about one which happened 14 years ago bc it has had such long-term and wonderful effects. At my work, I went outside to eat lunch on the patio. Seeing no one I knew and few places to sit, I accepted an invitation to join a stranger at her table. During our get acquainted conversation, I mentioned the name of my new husband (both his and my spouses had died a few years prior). Her surprising response was, “I know him!” We not only became friends, but Vicki and I became “sisters” who have continued to talk and FaceTime weekly
    – even since our retirement 11 years ago! We now do a Bible study through FaceTime since we live about 50 miles apart. God is so good!

May God continue to bless so many through your blogs and your great books!
