How to Deal With the Shadows We Fear
I feel afraid of shadows sometimes. They often come in the form of the “what-ifs. What shadows frighten you? Here’s reassurance to help overcome that fear.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4 NASB)
Our grandkids spent the weekend with us. What fun we had with these four little ones, ages 1,2,4, and 5! The things they say made me laugh time and time again.
I tucked four-year-old Luke into bed on Saturday evening. And out of his mouth came the words, “Sometimes I’m afraid of shadows.” His honesty blessed me, and I could relate to his concern. I, too, feel afraid of shadows sometimes. They often come in the form of the “what-ifs.”
What-if shadows
Yesterday morning in church, the worship team led us in singing a song that addressed shadows. The lyrics, based on Psalm 23, bore the reminder that Christ’s followers need not fear for His presence goes with us.
Christ with us dispels the shadows
Christ’s presence living in us doesn’t mean we’re immune from tough times. It does, however, mean we have every reason for peace and confidence and joy in the midst of them. We can either focus on the shadows—the “what-ifs”—or allow the light of His presence to dispel them. It’s our choice.
If you’re facing a shadow today, take a few minutes to listen to this song by Matt Redman. Let the lyrics calm your heart and settle your fears.
Know you are loved,
